Commit to a Better Version of You

Overcoming the roller coaster of wanting more but fearing the work

Nothing compares to the feeling of euphoria when we decide to better ourselves. In this moment, motivation is at an all-time high. It’s here where success is imminent. We stare in the mirror telling ourselves whatever we need to hear to create the correct mindset. The first step to change is realizing you have a problem.

Upfront, let’s be honest with each other. We all need to change in one way, shape, or form. Whether it’s losing weight, finding a new job, or following a dormant passion, the idea of betterment exists in more areas we care to admit. Here’s the beauty of it, that’s ok. The fifth human need for happiness described by famed life coach Tony Robbin’s is growth.

Cultivating a mindset of continuous growth and learning propels a life of progress. The feeling of stagnation cripples our ability to find self-actualization. I don’t care what you think, I’m here to tell you one thing. Believe it or not, you are here for a specific reason.

The Universe has blessed your body with a soul to give to the greater good. All your dreams, desires, and aspirations are possible because of one thing:

If you’re capable of thinking it, you’re capable of accomplishing it

James Altucher, the author of Choose Yourself and Reinvent Yourself has a great way of describing this. His model is:

Fire: Take the first step. It doesn’t matter how small the step, the important thing is you take it. This will inspire you to go all in.

Aim: Things are now moving. You are in the early stages of development. At this point, it’s important to see the long-term benefit in your short-term suffering. More so, develop the habits conducive to success.

Ready: It is now a way of life. You’ve come this far, why stop now. Here, discipline will keep you from falling off the wagon. Remember, embrace the journey, not the destination. 1% better every day.

Once you decide to set out on your journey, and truly commit, things will naturally work themselves out. Before taking off, there are three key variables you must consider:

  1. What is my why?
  2. Does this goal align with my values?
  3. Am I Ready?

Be honest when asking yourself these questions. Don’t tell yourself what you want to hear. Be as critical as you consider necessary. The most important thing is answering from a place of wholeness and connection. Know in your heart of hearts that you can do it. Be clear, concise, consistent, and committed knowing whatever you strive for will come into fruition.

What is my why?

Why do you want it? As an example, my why for getting out of the military is to stabilize my family so together we can grow and strengthen our relationships.

I understand that this life is all we have (as far as we know). I don’t want to have any regrets when I take my last breath. Now imagine the feeling of regret from missing your children grow. Terrifying.

What is your why?

Remember, the biggest mistake is having a superficial why. If your why is disposable, go deeper. Inevitably, you will find what you’re looking for.

Does this goal align with my values?

This was a game changer for me. Before, I would set goals and aspirations without consulting my value system. This was a recipe for disaster.

Take a few moments to see if your values will help you achieve success. Earlier I talked about not being superficial. It also applies here.

Here’s an example. I am passionate about living a fit and healthy life. I don’t live a healthy lifestyle to have an amazing body. Lucky for me, my wife loves me for who I am. I live this way because I value caring for my body. After all, it’s the only one I have. I value being capable to perform both physically and mentally. I value my understanding that being healthy directly correlates to living a happier, more fulfilled life.

Don’t set values that connect to a destination. Instead, make them broad as possible. This will keep you motivated for the long road ahead.

Am I ready?

The answer is yes. You wouldn’t be considering it if you weren’t. Your ego is going to do everything it can to prevent you from continuing.

What happens if you fail?

You’ll look stupid!

People will laugh!

You’re not ready!

You’re not good enough!

Don’t allow these irrational thoughts to hold you back. Commit to making your life amazing.

One of my favorite quotes of all time is from ex-Navy Seal and leadership expert Jocko Willink. He says “discipline leads to freedom”.

Your mind, body, and soul will have it no other way. Anything that goes against your new way of living is unwelcome. The payoff will be worth it. I promise!

Fuck motivation, cultivate discipline
